Purpose

This project immerses students in understanding and celebrating community diversity through storytelling, fostering personal connections and deeper empathy. Students engage actively with local narratives by interviewing community members, crafting biographies, and creating artistic representations, culminating in a public exhibition that showcases these varied voices. The endeavor enhances students' skills in critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-directed learning while enriching their academic mindset and content expertise within a real-world context. Through shared stories, students and community members collaborate to bridge gaps, building a collective identity that honors unique perspectives and histories.

Learning goals

Students will develop effective communication skills through listening and responding with empathy and constructing compelling narratives. They'll advance critical thinking by investigating personal histories and synthesizing insights to explore broader community dynamics. Additionally, students will refine their content expertise as they analyze themes and symbols in storytelling while conducting interviews. Throughout the project, students will cultivate collaboration by co-designing art pieces that reflect shared community values and histories. These combined experiences will enhance self-directed learning as students balance revision, reflection, and project management.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will produce a final biography, photograph, and artistic representation capturing the essence of their interviewee. They'll collaboratively design a mural or art installation using symbols, colors, and textures to depict diverse community narratives. Additionally, students will compile a published anthology or zine featuring their collected biographies and artwork, serving as a lasting resource for the community.

Launch

Begin by introducing students to the power and importance of diverse narratives through watching the TED Talk "Dangers of a Single Story," which highlights storytelling's impact on perception and empathy. Follow this with organizing a 'Story Circle Launch,' where students gather in small groups to share impactful personal anecdotes, fostering initial community building and encouraging openness to diverse experiences. This approach sets the groundwork for the forthcoming interviews, emphasizing mutual understanding and the complexity of every individual's narrative.

Exhibition

Host a vibrant community event to showcase the students' biographies and artistic representations. Arrange for each community member interviewed to stand alongside their personalized exhibit, offering attendees a chance to engage directly with the narratives and artifacts. Enhance the event with a ‘Community Story Walk,’ where visitors explore the exhibition guided by visual and textual clues, revealing the larger tapestry of community stories and fostering deeper connectivity among participants.
