Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the exploration of Art Nouveau while connecting its historical and cultural aspects to contemporary social themes. Through creating posters, students apply project-based learning to critically analyze and represent societal issues that matter to them using art as a medium. This hands-on activity fosters self-directed learning, encourages reflective practice, and develops content expertise as students transform traditional art motifs into modern narratives, preparing them for deeper engagements with the world around them.

Learning goals

Through this project, students will deepen their understanding of Art Nouveau by investigating its key characteristics and techniques, such as line work and color palettes, and exploring ways to reinterpret these elements to address contemporary social themes. They will develop skills in critical thinking and problem-solving by designing innovative posters that connect historical art styles with modern issues, while honing their self-directed learning capabilities through feedback and reflection processes. Additionally, students will enhance their effective communication skills by presenting their work in the 'Nouveau Narratives Tour' and the virtual exhibition, articulating their thought processes and artistic choices.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.

  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will design Art Nouveau-inspired posters that integrate contemporary social themes. These posters will be crafted using techniques explored in the Interactive Nouveau Workshop, focusing on line work, color palettes, and motif transformation. The final product will be showcased in an online virtual gallery accessible by peers, family, and school community members. Additionally, students will prepare individual reflection journal entries to document their process and insights gained from the project, highlighting their evolving understanding of Art Nouveau and its modern reinterpretation.

Launch

The project kicks off with an Interactive Nouveau Workshop where students collaborate in pairs to experiment with Art Nouveau techniques. They dive into hands-on activities exploring line work, color palettes, and motifs in a format fostering creativity. As they work, they create early drafts of their poster concepts and consider how to incorporate meaningful social themes, setting the stage for the deeper exploration and artistic creation throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a 'Nouveau Narratives Tour' where they present their Art Nouveau-inspired posters to small groups, articulating the social themes and visual elements integrated into their designs. This exhibition will be held in person if possible and accompanied by a virtual gallery tour, accessible online, to ensure broader engagement from family and community members. In each presentation, students will not only showcase their creative work but also reflect on their personal connections to the social themes depicted, fostering an open dialogue about the relevance of art in addressing contemporary issues.
