Purpose

This project focuses on igniting creativity and environmental consciousness by empowering students to transform recycled materials into art that tells compelling stories about conservation and sustainable living. By collaborating with peers and engaging with local waste management professionals, students will grasp the environmental impacts of waste and develop innovative solutions through artistic expression. The project's aim is to not only enrich students' understanding of art and materials but also to foster critical thinking and community awareness, culminating in an art exhibition that showcases their journey and impact on raising environmental awareness.

Learning goals

Students will grasp the environmental implications of recycling by exploring various materials' properties and their lifecycle, fulfilling NGSS and ELA Common Core standards through scientific inquiry and creative writing. By working together to design art pieces from repurposed materials, they will enhance collaboration and communication skills, utilizing narratives to express connection to conservation themes. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills will be honed by evaluating and revising art projects with community feedback, leading to informed artistic choices in their contributions to a community mural.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr2.2.6a - Explain environmental implications of conservation, care, and clean up of art materials, tools, and equipment.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr2.3.2a - Repurpose objects to make something new.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will collaborate on creating a community mural composed of mosaic tiles crafted from recycled materials, each tile representing a unique aspect of conservation. Additionally, they will produce a visual documentary that chronicles their artistic process, highlighting their creative decisions and the environmental impact of their materials and messages. Throughout the project, students will also develop creative writing pieces that narrate the stories of their chosen materials, solidifying their understanding and communication of sustainability themes.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic scavenger hunt activity called 'Treasure from Trash,' where students actively engage in collecting various discarded items throughout the school or community. Use this opportunity to have students discover the origins and potential uses of these objects, fostering awareness and sparking initial creative ideas for their art projects. This activity will encourage exploration and set the stage for innovative thinking about sustainability and waste crafting.

Exhibition

Organize an interactive Art Expo where students showcase their recycled material artworks, inviting peers, teachers, and community members to engage with the creative pieces. The event will feature students presenting their artworks and discussing the environmental narratives behind them, emphasizing their learnings on conservation. Encourage attendees to leave feedback and questions, fostering a dialog around sustainability and artistic expression. To enhance the experience, incorporate multimedia elements such as visual documentaries to illustrate the creative process and impact of each project.
