Purpose

Students will explore Roman architectural innovations through hands-on activities, fostering collaboration and critical thinking. By building models such as the Roman Dome and Arch, they will connect historical techniques with modern engineering challenges. The experience emphasizes learning from past innovations to enhance present-day problem-solving skills. This inquiry-driven approach encourages students to draw parallels between ancient and modern construction, deepening their understanding of the lasting impact of Roman engineering.

Learning goals

Students will explore Roman engineering innovations and understand their lasting influence on modern architecture. They will enhance collaboration skills while building models at each station, fostering teamwork and collective problem-solving. By redesigning a modern structure using Roman techniques, students will critically analyze and apply ancient methods to contemporary challenges. They will engage in deep reflection on the practicality and relevance of ancient construction methods compared to modern practices. Through hands-on activities and discussions, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the importance of innovation and iteration in engineering and architecture.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and present a modern-day structure, such as a bridge or pavilion, incorporating Roman architectural innovations such as arches or domes. They will work in small groups to create scale models using provided materials and appropriate design software to simulate their ideas digitally. Each group will prepare a short presentation explaining their design process, the Roman elements integrated, and the benefits of their redesigned structure.

Launch

Begin with an intriguing short video or presentation showcasing remarkable Roman architectural feats, sparking initial curiosity. Use engaging visuals and stories to highlight the creativity, innovation, and purpose behind Roman engineering marvels. Follow this with a brief, interactive discussion where students predict what elements of Roman architecture they will explore hands-on, fostering anticipation for the station activities.

Exhibition

At the end of the session, students will present their models to their classmates in a mini-exhibition. Each group will highlight the specific Roman engineering element they built and explain the modern application of these concepts. Invite other classes or parents to participate as visitors, where students can answer questions and provide insights into their redesigns of modern structures using Roman techniques. The audience will receive prompt cards with questions to stimulate discussion and allow students to engage with real-time feedback on their projects.
