Purpose

The purpose of this unit is to engage 5th-grade students in a practical and interactive exploration of printed media design, focusing on book and magazine covers, as well as newspaper articles. Throughout the unit, students will develop their critical thinking, self-directed learning, and effective communication skills by designing their own covers using Canva, inspired by real-world media influences. By analyzing and creating covers that tell compelling stories, students will build a deeper understanding of visual storytelling and its impact, while nurturing their sense of identity, belonging, and self-efficacy.

Learning goals

By the end of the unit, students will effectively create compelling book, magazine, and newspaper covers using Canva, demonstrating their understanding of visual storytelling techniques. They will engage in self-directed learning by regularly reflecting upon and utilizing feedback to enhance their design work. Students will collaborate with peers and professionals to refine their projects and develop critical communication skills by presenting and explaining their design choices. Through participation in workshops and real-world interactions, they will establish competencies in graphic design, color theory, typography, and media literacy.

Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

During this unit, students will design a series of compelling media products using Canva, including book covers, magazine covers, and front-page newspaper articles. They will experiment with color theory and typography, capturing the essence of their narratives through visual storytelling. Each student's culminating product will be a polished digital portfolio showcasing their design process and final pieces, shared in the 'Cover Design Showcase' to both peers and the community.

Launch

Engage students with a 'Cover Story Adventure' by encouraging them to bring in a favorite book or magazine to discuss what drew them to its cover. Facilitate a lively brainstorming session where students innovate by sketching their interpretations of captivating covers. Allow room for creativity as learners explore how different elements influence appeal, setting the stage for a unit brimming with design discovery.

Exhibition

Invite students to host a "Media Masterpieces Showcase," where they present their book and magazine covers to peers, teachers, and family members, explaining their design choices and the stories behind them. Facilitate an engaging Q&A session, allowing attendees to ask questions and students to articulate their design process and the messages conveyed through their work. Integrate interactive stations where visitors can use digital devices to explore students' digital portfolios, providing a platform for students to exhibit both their creative works and reflections on their learning journey.
