Purpose

The purpose of this hands-on mock trial project is to immerse students in the complex workings of the legal system while cultivating critical life skills in a dynamic, supportive environment. Through role-play and collaborative group activities, students build cultural intelligence by viewing issues from diverse perspectives, enhancing empathy and understanding. As they tactically design case strategies and iterate their arguments, learners develop effective public speaking skills that are essential for advocacy and influence in real-world scenarios. This project encourages students to harness their multilingual abilities and extend their communication networks, reinforcing community bonds and collective problem-solving.

Learning goals

Students will investigate the role and function of the legal system by engaging in a mock trial experience. They will explore multiple perspectives and solutions to staging courtroom dramas, developing skills in public speaking and argumentation. The project will provide opportunities for building cultural intelligence and multilingual abilities as students collaborate in diverse groups and networks. Learners will design models of court procedures and iteratively test and refine their presentation strategies to effectively communicate their case.

Products

Students will create and perform a mock trial script, taking on roles such as attorneys, witnesses, jury members, and judges, showcasing their understanding of the legal system and public speaking. Each group will build a tangible model of a courtroom, which will be used as the stage for their performance, allowing them to explore multiple perspectives and solutions to theatrical staging problems. Students will also develop a multilingual argument plan and create a reflection journal that documents their progress in building cultural intelligence and the skills acquired in designing solutions to the drama work. As a final product, students will produce a video recording of the mock trial to share with the community, demonstrating their ability to build networks and engage effectively in their regional language contexts.

Launch

Begin the project with a visit from a local lawyer or judge to discuss the real-world impact of the legal system. Following the guest interaction, students engage in a brainstorming session to identify various roles within a courtroom and the importance of public speaking in presenting strong cases. Conclude the launch with students crafting individual action plans for their roles in the upcoming mock trial, setting the stage for deeper exploration.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the mock trial project, students will host a public showcase where they perform the trial in front of peers, faculty, and invited community members. Each participant will present their findings, display prototypes or models related to the case, and demonstrate their understanding of court roles and legal proceedings. The exhibition will include multilingual dialogues to celebrate diversity and cultural intelligence, allowing students to communicate effectively with guests from various backgrounds. There will be structured segments where observers can ask questions and engage with students about their processes and strategies, fostering network-building and reflection on justice in everyday life.
