Purpose

The purpose of the farm project is to immerse kindergarten students in a hands-on exploration of farming as it intersects with various subjects, fostering learning through interconnected experiences. By integrating school values like kindness, respect, and collaboration, students will gain an appreciation for community roles and the importance of farms. This comprehensive journey extends beyond academic growth, nurturing social-emotional skills and encouraging young learners to express their understanding creatively and thoughtfully.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this farm project encompass the understanding of plant growth processes and the unique characteristics of farms, including tools and techniques used in animal care. Students will develop math and science skills through hands-on gardening activities and farm model construction, while strengthening socio-emotional learning by reflecting on the role of farmers in the community and engaging in collaborative projects. Social studies knowledge will be enriched through exploring farm structures and functions, fostering an appreciation for sustainability and the diversity of agricultural practices.

Products

Students will create a vibrant plant art piece using materials from their farm visit and school garden, encapsulating the beauty and diversity of farm life. They will collaboratively design detailed farm models that showcase different farming techniques and animal habitats. Each student will develop a personal 'Seed-to-Plant Storyboard' illustrating the growth journey from seed to vegetable. As a collective, they will produce an interactive mural that narrates the lifecycle of a plant through touch, smell, and visual cues, reflecting their understanding of the farming process. Additionally, they will curate sensory bottles filled with seeds and herbs, enhancing the sensory exploration of agricultural diversity.

Launch

Begin the project with a hands-on session where the master gardener uses a storytelling technique to introduce students to the journey of a seed transforming into a plant. During this engaging launch, students will touch and plant seeds, identifying parts of the plant and discussing how farmers nurture their growth. This initial interactive activity sets the stage for exciting explorations in the weeks ahead.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Farm Festival' where they set up interactive stations showcasing their discoveries about farms, including their plant art pieces and storytelling presentations. The event will culminate in a 'Farm Adventure Quest', guiding guests through student-led exhibitions and discussions about farming techniques and the uniqueness of each farm. This collaborative event will foster community engagement and celebrate the students' learning journey, with opportunities for family and community feedback through drawings and commentary.
