Students will explore how geography shapes human experiences by engaging in interactive, hands-on activities that connect them to local and global contexts. They will collaboratively design personalized maps, build geographical models, and conduct virtual explorations to deepen their understanding of the relationships between environmental characteristics and human life. Through self-directed learning and reflection, students will develop critical thinking and communication skills, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Learning goals
Students will have opportunities to deepen their understanding of geography through hands-on activities that integrate map reading and creation, fostering skills in spatial reasoning and representation. They will explore the relationship between geography and daily life by creating personalized maps showcasing local influence. Through collaborative projects, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while engaging with diverse perspectives on geographic features and ecosystems. Effective communication and self-directed learning will be emphasized as students reflect on their work, share insights with peers, and lead discussions in exhibitions.

[California] RI.3.2 - Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
[California] RI.3.7 - Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
[California] W.3.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
[California] W.3.7 - Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.
[California] SL.3.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
[California] SL.3.4 - Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.
[California] RI.4.1 - Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
[California] RI.4.2 - Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
[California] RI.4.4 - Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area. (See grade 4 Language standards 4–6 for additional expectations.)
[California] RI.4.7 - Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
[California] W.4.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
[California] W.4.7 - Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
[California] W.4.8 - Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes, paraphrase, and categorize information, and provide a list of sources.
[California] 3.1.1 - Identify geographical features in their local region (e.g., deserts, mountains, valleys, hills, coastal areas, oceans, lakes).
[California] 3.1.2 - Trace the ways in which people have used the resources of the local region and modified the physical environment (e.g., a dam constructed upstream changed a river or coastline).
Competencies
Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
Products
Students will create personalized maps and 3D models of geographic features, highlighting how geography influences their community and daily activities. They will produce postcards annotated with key geographical features and their cultural impacts, adding them to an interactive display board. Throughout the unit, students will collaboratively design and construct a 3D model of a specific Californian geographic feature, presenting how it affects ecosystems and human interactions. Additionally, students will develop virtual tour presentations, showcasing the relationship between different climates and geographic locations worldwide.
Launch
Kick off the project with a series of 'Virtual Tours' where students explore diverse geographic locations online, focusing on different climates and landscapes. In small groups, students will discuss how these factors influence lifestyles and cultures in each region, recording their observations. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and lay the foundation for understanding geography's impact on people's lives.
Exhibition
Students will host a 'Mapping My World' evening, where they will present personalized maps they've crafted. Each map will showcase how geography influences their community and daily lives. Guests will be invited to contribute their insights, adding personal perspectives to the student projects. This exhibition offers a platform for students to share their learning while fostering community engagement and discussion.
