Purpose
This project aims to deepen students' appreciation for art by cultivating their ability to engage with artwork over extended periods. Through a structured progression of uninterrupted viewing, students will develop critical observation skills and an understanding of how art can evoke emotional and intellectual responses. By creating their own art pieces and designing viewing benches, students will apply artistic techniques and collaborate to present work that resonates with their community. This hands-on experience fosters self-directed learning, critical thinking, and effective communication, aligning with national standards and competencies.
Learning goals
Students will develop the ability to analyze and interpret artistic works, enhancing their skills in observation and reflection through prolonged engagement with art. They will refine their artistic techniques by creating pieces that captivate viewers, while also designing functional benches to complement the viewing experience. Through collaboration and critique, students will strengthen their communication and problem-solving skills, fostering a deeper understanding of art's emotional and intellectual impact. This project will encourage self-directed learning, allowing students to explore their artistic identity and establish a sense of belonging within their community.
Standards
- [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 4 - Select, analyze and interpret artistic work for presentation.
- [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 5 - Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
- [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 8 - Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
- [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 1 - Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Competencies
- Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
- Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
- Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
- Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
- Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
Products
Throughout the project, students will create weekly reflection journals documenting their evolving experiences and insights from the art viewing sessions. By the end of the 10-week period, each student will produce a unique piece of art designed to engage viewers for at least 5 minutes, along with three thought-provoking prompts for community engagement. Additionally, students will collaboratively design and construct a bench that complements their exhibition space, ensuring comfort for extended art observation.
Launch
To kick off the project, students will embark on a school-wide art exploration, where they will spend 5-10 minutes viewing various artworks displayed around the campus. Afterward, they will gather in small groups to discuss their initial experiences, focusing on the challenges and insights gained from uninterrupted viewing. This activity will set the stage for the project's emphasis on deep engagement and reflection, encouraging students to consider how prolonged observation can transform their understanding and appreciation of art.
Exhibition
Students will organize a public exhibition showcasing their final art pieces and benches, inviting peers, teachers, and community members to engage with the artwork. Each class will select one standout piece to be highlighted, accompanied by a bench designed for comfortable viewing. The exhibition will feature interactive stations where visitors can participate in the uninterrupted viewing challenge, fostering dialogue around the emotional and intellectual impact of prolonged engagement with art. Students will take turns guiding attendees through the exhibition, sharing insights from their reflections and critiques.
