Purpose
This project aims to immerse students in the rich tapestry of Hispanic literature while honing their creative and technical filmmaking skills. By analyzing short stories and translating them into film scripts, students will explore cultural narratives and storytelling techniques. They will engage in a hands-on process of creating film shorts, culminating in a school exhibition and participation in the iVIE Movie Competition. The project fosters a deeper understanding of cultural contexts and encourages students to connect historical themes with contemporary issues and their own experiences.
Learning goals
Students will analyze and interpret Hispanic short stories, focusing on narrative structures and cultural contexts. They will study and apply film direction techniques to create a compelling script and storyboard, reflecting the style of a chosen director. Through collaborative film production, students will enhance their Spanish language skills, engage in critical reflection on cultural and historical themes, and explore their relevance to contemporary issues. The project will culminate in a film and mural that visually and thematically express the students' understanding and creativity.
Products
Students will collaboratively create a short film that adapts a Hispanic short story, utilizing narrative techniques and visual styles inspired by a renowned director. This film will be showcased at the school exhibition and submitted to the iVIE Movie Competition. Additionally, students will develop a mural that visually represents the themes and cultural nuances of the Hispanic short stories studied, reflecting contemporary issues and personal experiences of 2025. These projects will be displayed during the all-school exhibition, allowing students to share their creative interpretations and insights with a broader audience.
Launch
Begin the project with an immersive experience by visiting a local art museum or cultural center featuring Hispanic art and storytelling. Follow this with a collaborative class discussion analyzing Diego Rivera's "Pan American Unity" mural, focusing on its narrative and cultural themes. Encourage students to connect these themes to their personal experiences and contemporary issues, setting the stage for their creative film and mural projects.
Exhibition
Students will present their short films and murals at the All-School Exhibition on December 17th from 5-7pm at HTHNC, creating an immersive experience that showcases their creative interpretations and storytelling skills. Each film will be screened, followed by a Q&A session where students can discuss their creative process, challenges, and insights gained. The murals will be displayed alongside the films, offering a visual narrative that complements the themes explored in the short stories. This event will serve as a platform for students to engage with peers, educators, and the community, fostering a deeper appreciation of Hispanic literature and film.
