Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to guide students in exploring geometric shapes to design and construct a winter scene, aligning with National Core Arts Standards. Through hands-on activities and storytelling, students will organize and develop artistic ideas, engage in imaginative play, and create art representing natural and constructed environments. This project also supports self-directed learning and critical thinking, encouraging students to express their identities and ideas while building confidence in their artistic abilities.

Learning goals

Students will explore and manipulate geometric shapes to create a winter scene, aligning with the National Core Arts Standards by generating and organizing artistic ideas. They will engage in imaginative play and storytelling, using their scenes to describe and share narratives with peers, thereby representing natural and constructed environments. Through this process, students will practice self-directed learning by reflecting on their work and incorporating feedback, while also building skills in various media and approaches to art-making. They will develop a sense of identity and belonging as they express their creativity and connect with peers in the storytelling circle.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 1 - Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 2 - Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr1.1.Ka - Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr2.3.Ka - Create art that represents natural and constructed environments.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Re7.2.Ka - Describe what an image represents.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr2.1.Ka - Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to art-making.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a winter scene collage using geometric shape cutouts to represent objects like snowflakes, trees, and animals, focusing on artistic exploration and imaginative play. Each student will craft a short story to accompany their scene, describing the narrative and the shapes they incorporated, aligning with the standards of generating and organizing artistic ideas. These collages and stories will be shared in the 'Snowy Storytelling Circle,' where students will present their work, describe the images, and engage in storytelling with their peers.

Launch

Begin the lesson by reading "Mouse Shapes" to the class, inviting students to identify and discuss the different shapes they notice in the illustrations, emphasizing how these shapes can be used to create art. After the story, transition into a hands-on exploration where students use pre-cut geometric shapes to collaboratively create a large winter scene on the classroom floor. Encourage students to experiment with combining shapes to form familiar winter objects, fostering an atmosphere of playful discovery and creativity, while aligning with artistic standards of exploration and imaginative play.

Exhibition

In the 'Snowy Storytelling Circle,' students will present their winter scenes, describing the geometric shapes they used to create their artwork. They will share a short story about their scene, highlighting how the shapes represent elements of the winter environment. Classmates will engage by asking questions and offering observations, reinforcing the exploration and imaginative play emphasized in the arts standards.
