Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse pre-k students in the fascinating world of birds through hands-on exploration and creative expression. By engaging in activities such as crafting bird feeders, building dioramas, and participating in birdwatching events, students will develop a deeper understanding of bird communication and habitats. This project encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking, and effective communication, fostering a sense of identity and belonging as students connect with their community and the natural environment.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of bird communication by exploring various bird calls and behaviors in their natural habitats. They will enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills through hands-on activities such as crafting bird feeders and building dioramas. By engaging in self-directed learning, students will reflect on their observations and share insights during group discussions and exhibitions. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, students will practice effective communication, expressing their ideas and findings in a supportive environment.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create bird feeders using recycled materials, documenting the types of birds that visit them and sharing their observations. They will also craft dioramas depicting bird habitats, showcasing their understanding of how birds live and communicate. Additionally, students will produce bird-related art projects, such as drawings or sculptures, to be displayed in a Bird Art Gallery, reflecting their creativity and comprehension of bird species and sounds.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Chirp and Chatter Gathering,' where students will immerse themselves in the world of birds by listening to various bird calls and attempting to mimic them. This interactive session will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring bird communication. Facilitate a lively group discussion afterward, encouraging students to share their thoughts on what the birds might be expressing through their sounds.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Birdwatcher's Picnic' in a local park where they guide their families through a birdwatching session, sharing their observations and stories about the birds they have studied. Following the birdwatching, students will present their bird art projects and dioramas during a 'Bird Habitat Exhibition,' explaining how birds live and communicate in their environments. This event will allow students to showcase their creativity and understanding of bird communication and habitats, while engaging with the community in a meaningful way.
