Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage third graders in a hands-on exploration of graphing by connecting mathematical concepts to real-world holiday traditions. Through collecting and analyzing data on favorite holiday activities and treats, students will develop critical thinking skills and deepen their understanding of how graphs can communicate information effectively. This project fosters collaboration with community partners and encourages students to share their findings in a meaningful way, culminating in a festive 'Holiday Graph Gala' exhibition.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in collecting, organizing, and interpreting categorical data by conducting surveys on holiday traditions and treats. They will enhance their ability to create and analyze bar graphs, using these tools to communicate findings effectively. Through the 'Holiday Graph Gala' and collaboration with a local bakery, students will engage in critical thinking by making informed decisions based on their data, fostering new understandings of diverse holiday practices.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.3.MD.3 - Investigate questions involving categorical data.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.

Products

Students will gather data through surveys about classmates' favorite holiday activities, then use this data to create colorful bar graphs. These graphs will be designed with creative holiday themes, incorporating elements like Christmas trees, ornaments, or snowflakes to visually enhance their presentation. The final product will be displayed at the 'Holiday Graph Gala,' where students will articulate their data collection and analysis process to attendees. Additionally, students will collaborate with a local bakery to create graphs on popular holiday treats, culminating in a tasting event where they present their findings.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, organize a festive "Holiday Survey Day" where students conduct interactive surveys with classmates and teachers about their favorite holiday activities and treats. Set up stations around the classroom with holiday decorations and music to create an engaging atmosphere. Students will use tablets or paper surveys to gather data, which will later be used to create their holiday-themed bar graphs. This activity will spark curiosity and excitement, setting the stage for the project ahead.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Holiday Graph Gala' where they present their holiday-themed bar graphs on easels. During the exhibition, students will articulate their data collection and analysis process to visiting family members and community guests. The event will feature interactive stations where guests can engage with the graphs and ask questions, fostering a deeper understanding of the students' work.
