Purpose

This project aims to cultivate an understanding of how our bodies function and the importance of maintaining health through engaging, hands-on activities. By collaborating with community partners like doctors, dentists, and fitness coaches, students will explore practical ways to care for their bodies. Through reflection and self-directed learning, they will assess their habits and create personal health tools. The experience culminates in a family and teacher exhibition where students present their projects, showcasing their newfound knowledge and skills.

Learning goals

Students will explore how different parts of their bodies function and learn practical ways to maintain health through exercise, diet, and rest. They will engage with community partners, such as doctors and dentists, to understand health practices and apply this knowledge to create a personalized health plan. Through hands-on projects, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, reflecting on personal habits and making informed decisions to improve their well-being. They will communicate their learning by presenting their projects to families and teachers, fostering a sense of identity and belonging within their community.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a personalized "Healthy Habits" booklet featuring drawings and simple descriptions of body parts and their functions. They will also design and assemble a "Body Care Kit" with items like a toothbrush, a small towel, and a water bottle, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and hydration. At the end of the project, students will collaboratively build a large, interactive body puzzle to demonstrate their understanding of how different parts of the body work together to keep us healthy and strong.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with an interactive "Body Adventure Day" where students explore various stations representing different body parts. Each station will feature simple, hands-on activities led by community partners like doctors and fitness coaches, such as measuring heartbeats, identifying healthy foods, or practicing simple exercises. This engaging start will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration of how our bodies work and how to keep them healthy.

Exhibition

Invite families and teachers to a "Healthy Bodies Showcase" where students present their projects demonstrating how they care for their bodies. Each student can display a creative product, such as a personalized health poster or a simple model of a body part, explaining its function and care. Students can also perform a short group exercise routine learned from the fitness coach visit, showcasing their understanding of the importance of physical activity. This exhibition will allow students to communicate their learning and reflect on their personal health habits with their community.
