Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 3rd-grade students in a hands-on exploration of gut health, connecting scientific concepts to their everyday lives. By collaborating with a local pediatrician and conducting their own research, students will develop a deeper understanding of the digestive system's role in maintaining overall health. This experience aims to cultivate critical thinking, self-directed learning, and effective communication skills as students reflect on their findings and share insights through creative media. Ultimately, students will gain a sense of ownership over their health choices, fostering lifelong habits and an academic mindset that values inquiry and community connection.

Learning goals

Students will explore the digestive system and its connection to overall health, focusing on the role of gut health. They will engage in self-directed research, using feedback to refine their understanding and personal health choices. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, students will address real-world questions about nutrition and well-being, developing content expertise and effective communication skills. By collaborating with a local pediatrician and sharing their findings through creative media, they will strengthen their sense of identity and belonging within their community.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] ESS.2.E - Biogeology
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a series of visual journals documenting their daily food choices and gut health observations, which they will use to track patterns and insights. By the end of the project, students will collaboratively produce a short video or podcast episode that explains the significance of gut health, highlighting personal stories of dietary changes and their effects. These multimedia presentations will be shared during a project showcase, allowing students to present their findings and reflect on their learning journey with peers, family, and community members.

Launch

Kick off the project with an engaging "Gut Health Detective" activity where students become investigators exploring the mysteries of the digestive system. Set up interactive stations with hands-on activities such as examining different types of food and their impact on digestion, using magnifying glasses to observe bacteria models, and simulating the digestive process with simple experiments. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration of gut health throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Gut Health Fair" where they present their video or podcast episodes to peers, teachers, and family members. Each student will have a booth displaying their research findings, personal health choices, and reflections. The event will include interactive activities like "Build a Balanced Meal" stations and Q&A sessions with the visiting pediatrician, fostering a community-wide dialogue on the importance of gut health.
