Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse Pre-K students in a hands-on exploration of bread-making, fostering curiosity and self-directed learning through sensory experiences and cultural storytelling. By engaging with the bread-making process, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they consider the origins and roles of different ingredients. This project aims to build a sense of community and belonging, as children collaborate with peers, share their creations, and connect with local bakers, enhancing their academic mindset and effective communication skills.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are to foster self-directed learning by encouraging children to explore and reflect on bread ingredients and their origins. Students will develop an academic mindset by establishing a sense of belonging through cultural stories and bread-making traditions. They will enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills by experimenting with ingredient combinations and techniques. Content expertise will be built as children learn about the bread-making process and its cultural significance. Effective communication will be practiced through sharing their creations and experiences with peers, families, and community partners.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, children will create mini bread loaves using various ingredients they explore and discover. They will also produce artwork inspired by their bread-making experiences, such as paintings or collages depicting their favorite ingredients and bread types. By the end of the project, children will present their bread creations at the 'Bread Festival,' showcasing their understanding of the bread-making process and the cultural significance of different bread types.

Launch

Kick off the project with 'Ingredient Discovery Week,' where each child brings in a different bread ingredient from home. Facilitate a sensory exploration where children touch, smell, and taste the ingredients, sharing stories about their origins. Encourage children to discuss the textures, smells, and cultural significance of each ingredient, setting the stage for the bread-making journey ahead.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Bread Festival' where children proudly display their bread creations to families and classmates. Each child will have the opportunity to explain the ingredients and process they used, fostering effective communication skills. The event will feature tasting stations and a 'Bread Art Gallery' showcasing children's artwork inspired by their bread-making journey. Invite community partners, such as a local bakery, to participate and enrich the festival with demonstrations and interactive activities.
