Purpose

The purpose of this Biopsychology Passion Project is to engage students in a creative exploration of key topics within the course, allowing them to demonstrate their understanding and application of biopsychological concepts to real-world scenarios. Through hands-on projects, students will collaborate with peers, reflect on their learning, and present their findings, fostering critical thinking, effective communication, and content expertise. This project aims to deepen students' connection to the material by encouraging them to investigate how biopsychology influences mental health, perception, memory, and neurological innovation, ultimately preparing them to address complex questions relevant to their communities.

Learning goals

Students will explore the intersection of biopsychology and real-world applications by designing projects that address essential questions related to brain function, mental health, sensation, perception, sleep, stress management, and memory. They will collaborate with classmates to co-design and refine their projects, demonstrating critical thinking, effective communication, and content expertise. Through reflection and exhibition, students will articulate their understanding and propose innovative solutions to community-relevant challenges, showcasing their ability to apply psychological principles in meaningful ways.
Standards

Competencies
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will create a personalized project that showcases their understanding of a biopsychology topic, applying it to real-world scenarios. This could be a multimedia presentation, a research paper, or an innovative model or prototype addressing a community issue related to mental health, sensation, perception, or memory. Students will present their projects in an exhibition format, allowing them to communicate their findings and reflections to peers, teachers, and community members. Throughout the process, students will engage in peer critiques and revisions to refine their work, ensuring a high-quality final product.

Launch

To kick off the Passion Project for the Biopsychology class, students will participate in an interactive "Brainstorming Fair." Each student will set up a small booth showcasing a preliminary idea for their project, using visual aids or props to illustrate their chosen topic. Classmates will circulate, providing feedback and suggestions, fostering a collaborative environment. This activity will not only ignite curiosity and excitement but also encourage students to refine their ideas through peer interaction and critical reflection.

Exhibition

Students will present their passion projects through a dynamic exhibition that includes interactive displays, digital presentations, and creative demonstrations. Each student or pair will showcase their work to classmates, teachers, and community members, offering insights into their chosen biopsychology topic and its real-world applications. The exhibition will feature a Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage with the students' findings and explore the implications of their projects on mental health, sensation, perception, and memory.
