Purpose

This project immerses students in the foundational years of the United States, enabling them to critically explore the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the concept of Manifest Destiny. Through collaborative activities and creative presentations, students will engage with historical events and leaders, fostering a deeper understanding of how early conflicts and expansions shaped national identity. By integrating community partnerships and utilizing primary sources, students will develop critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning skills, culminating in a reflective group timeline project that connects past events to present-day implications.

Learning goals

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the early years of the United States government, focusing on the creation and significance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. They will explore the roles of the three branches of government and analyze the impact of Manifest Destiny and early conflicts on national unity. Through engaging in project-based activities, students will develop critical thinking, effective communication, and content expertise by examining primary sources and presenting their findings creatively. Additionally, students will practice self-directed learning and reflection, building a sense of identity and belonging within the historical context.

Products

Students will create a multimedia timeline of early American history, highlighting key events and leaders, which will be presented in a group setting. They will also produce a podcast or video documentary analyzing primary sources related to Manifest Destiny, demonstrating their understanding and analytical skills. These projects will incorporate feedback from peers and the principal, fostering self-directed learning and effective communication.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience by organizing a "Constitutional Convention" role-play where students assume the roles of historical figures involved in the creation of the U.S. Constitution. Begin with a brief introduction to the historical context, followed by a simulation where students debate and discuss key issues of the time. This immersive activity will set the stage for exploring the formation of the government and the nation's early challenges, encouraging students to think critically and collaborate from the start.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Constitutional Convention" event at the school, where they will present their creative projects such as podcasts or video documentaries on Manifest Destiny to peers, teachers, and community members, including the principal. They will also display a collaborative timeline of early American history, engaging visitors in discussions about the roles of the three branches of government and the impact of key historical events and leaders. This exhibition will provide students with the opportunity to reflect on their learning journey and share their insights and analyses through interactive presentations and discussions.
