Purpose

The purpose of the "Seeds of Change" project is to engage second-grade students in hands-on activities that foster an understanding of environmental conservation and cultural perspectives. Through collaborative research, creative expression, and community involvement, students will develop skills in writing, math, and multimedia storytelling. By connecting with local and global partners, students will explore diverse approaches to caring for the Earth, ultimately contributing to a published book that impacts their community and inspires environmental stewardship.

Learning goals

Students will engage in shared research and writing projects, enhancing their literacy skills while exploring environmental conservation. They will develop self-directed learning competencies, using feedback and reflection to guide their growth. Through hands-on activities and community partnerships, students will deepen their understanding of plant biology, material science, and the impact of human actions on the environment. They will apply math skills to real-world scenarios, such as calculating plant growth and environmental impact, and creatively express their learning through multimedia presentations, music, and art.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.7 - Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the Seeds of Change project, students will collaboratively create a published book that includes their illustrated chapters, showcasing their understanding of environmental conservation and cultural approaches. They will design and distribute family seed starter kits, incorporating math calculations related to plant growth. Additionally, students will produce multimedia presentations that integrate music, comics, and games to creatively communicate their advocacy for Earth care. The project will culminate in a community event where students present their environmental improvement plans and perform songs or skits developed with local artists, demonstrating their growth and contributions to local ecology.

Launch

Begin the project with an engaging 'Seeds of Change Concert,' where students collaborate with local musicians and artists to create and perform songs and skits about environmental advocacy. This event sets the stage for integrating music and art into conservation efforts, inspiring students to explore their interests in creative ways. Following the concert, initiate the 'Change Makers' workshop series, allowing students to dive into hands-on activities such as designing seed starter kits and illustrating environmental comics, fostering a sense of excitement and purpose for the upcoming project.

Exhibition

Host the 'Seeds of Change Festival,' where students present their multimedia projects, perform environmental-themed songs or skits, and display illustrated book chapters. Invite local stakeholders and community members to celebrate the students' contributions to environmental conservation. Create interactive stations where guests can engage with the seed starter kits and learn about the students' plans for local ecological improvement.
