Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in exploring the impact of word choice on the tone and meaning of texts through hands-on activities and collaborative projects. Students will deepen their understanding of figurative language and connotative meanings while building self-reflection and critical thinking skills. By connecting with community partners and creating a visual representation of their learning, students will establish a sense of identity and belonging, fostering a meaningful connection to their academic community.

Learning goals

Students will explore and analyze the impact of figurative language and connotative meanings on the tone of a text. They will develop self-directed learning skills by reflecting on their personal reactions to different texts and engaging in peer feedback. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, students will collaboratively create multimedia presentations and visual art that represent the tone and themes of texts, culminating in a community mural project.
Standards
  • [Massachusetts] RI.9-10.4 - Determine the meaning(s) of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative or contradictory impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language of a court opinion differs from that of a newspaper; how an author's word choice varies from one part of a text to another).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a community mural that visually represents the tone and themes of a selected text. They will use figurative language and connotative meanings as inspiration for the artwork, ensuring each element reflects their analysis of the text's language. The mural will be unveiled at an event for the school community, showcasing students' interpretations and creative expressions.

Launch

Begin the lesson with a 'Figurative Language Lab,' where students collaboratively experiment with crafting metaphors, similes, and personification. Encourage them to play with word choices to observe how these elements alter the tone of their writing. This hands-on activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration of the impact of language in texts.

Exhibition

Students will present their reflective journal entries in a 'Word Choice Gallery Walk,' accompanied by visual art or digital media that captures the tone of the texts they analyzed. This exhibition will invite visitors to engage with students' interpretations and provide feedback. The event will culminate in the unveiling of a community mural, inspired by figurative language and connotative meanings, showcasing the themes and tones explored throughout the lesson.
