Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in a hands-on project that deepens their understanding of linear and volume measurements through real-world application. By engaging in the design and construction of planter boxes, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while fostering a sense of community through collaboration with local partners. This project aims to build academic confidence and self-directed learning as students navigate the process from concept to creation, culminating in a tangible product that enhances their environment.

Learning goals

Students will develop a practical understanding of linear and volume measurements using inches, applying these skills to design and construct functional planter boxes. They will enhance their ability to estimate and measure lengths and volumes accurately, using appropriate tools and units. Additionally, students will cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills by engaging with community partners, receiving feedback, and refining their designs. Through collaboration and reflection, they will build self-directed learning habits and strengthen their academic mindset, fostering a sense of identity and belonging within their community.

Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct a functional planter box with legs. Throughout the project, they will create detailed blueprints that accurately reflect their measurements and design choices. By the end of the experience, students will present their finished planter boxes, showcasing their understanding of linear and volume measurements and their application in a real-world context.

Launch

Kick off the project with a hands-on 'Tool Time Exploration' session at the local hardware store, where students actively engage with measurement tools like rulers, tape measures, and calipers. During this visit, students will select materials for their planter boxes, gaining practical insights into measurement and material properties. This immersive experience will set the stage for the project by connecting classroom learning to real-world applications, sparking curiosity and excitement about the task ahead.

Exhibition

Host a 'Community Planting Day' where students showcase their planter boxes to classmates, teachers, and community partners. During the event, students will explain their design process, measurement strategies, and the functionality of their planter boxes. Attendees will participate in planting activities, fostering discussions on the importance of measurement in design and sustainability. This celebration will highlight students' achievements and encourage community engagement in sustainable practices.
