Purpose

Students will explore the practical application of linear equations by engaging in a project where they plan a hypothetical school event. This hands-on experience allows them to use mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through collaboration, self-reflection, and feedback, students will build confidence in their ability to apply math in meaningful ways, while also developing a sense of belonging and identity within their learning community.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to graph and interpret proportional relationships, recognizing the unit rate as the slope, through hands-on activities and real-world applications. They will construct functions to model linear relationships, enhancing their understanding of linear functions' properties. By engaging in self-directed learning and critical reflection, students will build self-knowledge and apply innovative problem-solving approaches to authentic scenarios, such as budgeting for a school event.
Standards
  • [] -
  • [Kentucky] KY.8.EE.5 - Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways.
  • [Kentucky] KY.8.F.4 - Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities.
  • [Kentucky] KY.8.EE.5 - Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways.
  • [Kentucky] KY.8.F.3 - Understand properties of linear functions.
  • [Kentucky] KY.8.F.4 - Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive budgeting plan for a hypothetical school event, using linear equations to predict costs and revenues. They will also design an infographic that visually represents the budgeting process, highlighting key financial insights through the use of linear equations. These products will be showcased during the 'Budget Challenge Presentation', where students pitch their ideas to a panel, including a representative from Daves store.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Linear Equation Scavenger Hunt' around the school, where students solve clues using linear equations to discover hidden items. Each item represents a component of a school event budget, introducing students to the real-world application of linear equations in planning and budgeting. This engaging activity sets the stage for the project, sparking curiosity and laying the foundation for the skills they will develop over the next three weeks.

Exhibition

Students will conclude the project with a 'Budget Challenge Presentation,' where they pitch their school event planning ideas to a panel that includes a representative from Daves store. This exhibition simulates a real-world business proposal scenario, allowing students to showcase their understanding of linear equations in budgeting. The panel will provide feedback, encouraging students to reflect on their learning journey and the practical application of mathematical concepts.
