Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in an exploration of curiosity and obsession as depicted in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," aligning with Kentucky ELA Grade 12 standards. Through interactive activities like scavenger hunts, role-plays, and multimedia presentations, students will compose arguments, analyze themes, and use narratives strategically to deepen their understanding. This project fosters self-directed learning and critical thinking, encouraging students to connect their insights to real-world contexts and share their findings in a virtual exhibition.

Learning goals

Students will compose arguments and informative texts that analyze Victor Frankenstein's motivations, using valid reasoning and textual evidence to explore the themes of curiosity and obsession. They will strategically use narratives and multimedia to convey complex ideas, enhancing their understanding of language and figurative meanings. Through peer feedback and reflection, students will build self-directed learning skills and strengthen their academic mindset, fostering a sense of belonging and critical engagement with their community.

Products

Students will create an interactive website that showcases their analysis of Frankenstein, featuring character profiles, thematic explorations, and multimedia presentations that address the line between curiosity and obsession. They will also develop a multimedia presentation that examines a character's journey, incorporating video clips, images, and narration to illustrate their understanding and personal growth. Additionally, students will participate in a 'Virtual Voyage' live-streamed event, presenting their projects to a wider audience, engaging in a Q&A session to further explore the essential question, ensuring alignment with Kentucky ELA Grade 12 standards.

Launch

Begin the learning experience with a 'Curiosity Quest' scavenger hunt at the public library, where students will uncover clues tied to themes in "Frankenstein." This interactive activity will prompt them to explore the boundary between curiosity and obsession, fostering engagement and setting the stage for deeper analysis and critical discussion throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Virtual Voyage,' a live-streamed event where they present their multimedia projects exploring themes from 'Frankenstein.' During the exhibition, students will engage with an online audience, including community members, through a Q&A session. This interactive platform allows students to showcase their understanding of the novel and the essential question, fostering dialogue and reflection on curiosity versus obsession, while meeting Kentucky ELA standards through analysis and narrative techniques.
