Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to equip students with practical negotiation skills through hands-on, real-world interactions. By engaging with community leaders and participating in interactive sessions, students will develop the ability to navigate conflicts respectfully and effectively. This experience aims to foster critical thinking, self-reflection, and an understanding of cultural influences on negotiation, enhancing students' confidence and competence in collaborative discussions.

Learning goals

Students will develop effective negotiation skills by engaging in collaborative discussions, refining their ability to articulate and justify their perspectives clearly and persuasively. They will explore the impact of cultural differences on negotiation styles and outcomes, enhancing their understanding of diverse viewpoints. Through real-world interactions with community partners, students will practice active listening and empathy, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. By reflecting on their experiences, they will build self-awareness and a sense of identity, contributing to their academic mindset and self-directed learning.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.1 - Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9—10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.I.c - Collaborate with peers to establish and implement a rehearsal plan to meet performance goals. Use a variety of strategies to analyze and evaluate performances of self and others (for example, use video recordings of practice to analyze the difference between the way movements look and how they feel to match performance with visual affect). Articulate performance goals and justify reasons for selecting particular practice strategies.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Pr5.HS2.a - Refine a range of acting skills to build a believable and sustainable drama/theatre performance.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a negotiation strategy guide, incorporating insights from community partners and personal experiences, which outlines effective conflict resolution techniques. They will also produce a video reflection summarizing their learning journey and demonstrating their negotiation skills in a mock scenario. These products will serve as both a personal learning tool and a resource for peers, showcasing the practical application of negotiation skills in diverse contexts.

Launch

Begin the lesson with a role-play exercise where students are divided into small groups and given a scenario involving a conflict that requires negotiation. Each group will have different roles, such as a mediator, negotiator, and parties involved, to encourage diverse perspectives. After the role-play, facilitate a brief group discussion to highlight initial thoughts on strategies used and cultural considerations observed, setting the stage for deeper exploration throughout the lesson.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Negotiation Showcase" where they demonstrate their negotiation skills through role-play scenarios with community partners and peers. Each group will present a negotiation case study, highlighting the strategies used and cultural considerations taken into account. The event will include a feedback session with community leaders and university faculty, allowing students to receive constructive insights and celebrate their growth in negotiation skills.
