Purpose

The purpose of this unit is to deepen students' understanding of the rich heritage and cultural contributions of Native American tribes in California, focusing on their geographic distribution, economic activities, legends, and religious beliefs. Through hands-on research, collaboration with community partners, and creative digital storytelling, students will explore the tribes' historical relationships with the land and each other. This project aims to foster empathy and appreciation for cultural diversity, encouraging students to reflect on how these traditions can be honored in contemporary life.

Learning goals

Products

Students will create an informative website focused on a chosen Native American tribe, highlighting its geographic distribution, economic activities, legends, and religious beliefs. The website will feature curated artifacts, images, and stories that demonstrate the tribe's adaptation to and modification of the physical environment. Additionally, students will produce a digital storytelling project, narrating legends and religious beliefs with audio contributions from community partners, and present their work in a virtual 'Empathy Gallery' to foster understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Virtual Tribal Journey,' where students explore curated digital resources, including interactive maps and videos, to immerse themselves in the historical and cultural landscape of Native American tribes in California. This online exploration sets the stage for understanding the tribes' geographic distribution and cultural heritage. Integrate a social justice diversity component by having students identify and reflect on the diverse ways tribes adapted to and modified their environments, fostering empathy and respect for cultural differences. Students will engage in an initial reflection activity, noting their observations and questions, which will guide their research and interactions throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a virtual 'Empathy Gallery' focusing on the major nations of California Indians, showcasing curated artifacts, images, and stories that highlight their geographic distribution, economic activities, legends, and religious beliefs. The exhibition will emphasize the tribes' adaptation and modification of their physical environment, integrating a social justice diversity component to honor their traditions and contributions.
