Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 6th-grade students in a hands-on exploration of history and culture through the creation of a museum display. By selecting and presenting artifacts, students will develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while fostering a sense of identity and belonging. This project encourages self-directed learning as students navigate research, collaboration, and reflection, ultimately culminating in a public exhibition that showcases their understanding and creativity.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in curating and presenting artifacts by creating a visual plan that effectively communicates the historical context and cultural significance of selected items. They will engage in critical thinking to analyze and select artifacts that best tell a compelling story about a specific time period or culture. Through self-directed learning, students will utilize feedback and reflection to enhance their understanding and presentation skills. By participating in collaborative activities, students will build a sense of identity and belonging, fostering an academic mindset that encourages exploration and understanding of diverse perspectives.

Products

Students will create a collection of replica artifacts using various materials, each accompanied by museum tags that provide detailed insights into the historical context and relevance of each item. They will compile a digital portfolio showcasing their museum display project, including photos of their artifacts, written descriptions, and reflections. The final product will be presented in a 'Gallery Walk' exhibition, where students will set up interactive displays to educate classmates about different cultures and time periods.

Launch

To kick off the Museum Display Project, students will embark on a Revolution and Evolution Fall Expedition to Jamestown, Yorktown, Sandy Springs, and The Museum of Industry. This immersive experience will allow students to explore historical sites and museums, providing firsthand insights into the artifacts and narratives they will later incorporate into their projects. The expedition will serve as an inspiring catalyst, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for their own museum display creations.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Gallery Walk' in the school library or gym, transforming the space into a vibrant museum showcasing their projects. Each group will set up their displays, complete with replica artifacts and detailed descriptions, inviting classmates from other grades to explore and engage with interactive activities. This event will serve as a platform for students to share their insights and foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and historical periods.
