Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse 5th-grade students in an engaging exploration of the U.S. Constitution and government structures, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and civic engagement. Through hands-on activities, students will connect historical concepts to current local issues, developing an understanding of their role as informed citizens. By collaborating with community partners and engaging in real-world problem-solving, students will gain insights into how government decisions impact their lives and society, culminating in meaningful contributions to their school and community.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are for students to understand the structures and functions of the U.S. government and how they impact daily life and global society. Students will develop skills in civic participation by engaging with local issues and proposing policy solutions. They will enhance their ability to collaborate, think critically, and communicate effectively through role-playing, campaign design, and public presentations. Additionally, students will cultivate an understanding of citizenship rights and responsibilities, and the importance of civic engagement in shaping policy and community outcomes.

  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Effective Communicator - Engages diverse audiences respectfully by exchanging ideas and information responsibly, listening actively, speaking and writing clearly, and using print and digital media appropriately.

Products

Students will create a podcast series discussing various aspects of the U.S. government, featuring interviews with local civic leaders and reflections from classmates. They will also design digital posters that highlight key points from their campaigns, using persuasive language and imagery to engage their peers. These products will be showcased in a 'Government Impact Gallery Walk' where students display their work for feedback and comments from the school community.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Government Mystery Hunt,' where students work in teams to follow clues hidden around the school. Each clue leads to a fact about the U.S. government and the Constitution, encouraging students to collaborate and engage with the content actively. This interactive activity sets the stage for the project by sparking curiosity and excitement about the structures and functions of the government.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their learning in a 'Government Impact Gallery Walk' set up in the school hallway. This exhibition will feature their 'Government Impact Journals' and campaign materials, allowing classmates, teachers, and community members to explore the students' work. Attendees will have the opportunity to provide feedback and comments, fostering a dialogue around the civic issues addressed. This interactive display will highlight students' understanding of government structures and their impact on both local and global scales.
