Purpose

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of societal marginalization through the lens of literature, specifically Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men.' By analyzing character experiences and choices, students will explore the complexities of human relationships and societal pressures. The project encourages critical thinking, self-reflection, and community engagement, fostering a connection between historical and contemporary issues of marginalization. Through collaborative activities and creative outputs, students will develop their analytical skills while gaining insights into the impact of societal attitudes both past and present.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking skills by analyzing the impact of societal marginalization on characters in 'Of Mice and Men' and evaluating complex moral decisions within the novel. They will enhance their self-directed learning through peer feedback and self-reflection, fostering a deeper understanding of their own identities and societal roles. Additionally, students will engage in collaborative discussions and creative projects, such as podcasts, to connect literary themes with contemporary issues, promoting a sense of belonging and active participation in community dialogues.

Products

Students will create a podcast series where they assume the role of literary critics, analyzing 'Of Mice and Men' and discussing its themes of marginalization. These podcasts will incorporate insights from the Community Voices Panel, allowing students to connect the novel's themes to contemporary issues. Additionally, students will present their essays and insights through creative formats like digital storytelling or live readings during the 'Literary Critics Showcase,' inviting parents and community members to engage in discussions.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Community Voices Panel' where local advocates discuss modern marginalization. Encourage students to draw connections between the themes in 'Of Mice and Men' and current societal issues. This engaging event will set the stage for students to explore the novel's characters and themes through a contemporary lens, fostering critical thinking and empathy.

Exhibition

At the 'Literary Critics Showcase,' students will present their essays and insights through creative formats such as podcasts, digital storytelling, or live readings. This exhibition invites parents and community members to engage in discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of the themes of marginalization explored in 'Of Mice and Men.' The showcase will provide a platform for students to share their analyses and reflections, connecting the novel's historical context to contemporary societal issues.
