Purpose

This project aims to engage kindergarten students in exploring the impact of food choices on their bodies and energy levels through interactive, community-based experiences. By collaborating with local experts, students will gain hands-on knowledge of healthy eating habits and the journey of food from farm to table. Through reflection, critique, and creative expression, students will develop critical thinking skills and an academic mindset, fostering a deeper understanding of nutrition and its role in their daily lives.

Learning goals

Students will explore the impact of food choices on their bodies and energy levels through hands-on activities and community engagement. They will develop skills in self-directed learning by reflecting on their eating habits and energy patterns. Through interactions with community partners, students will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, understanding the complex journey of food from farm to table. Additionally, students will cultivate an academic mindset by establishing connections with their community and recognizing the importance of healthy eating in daily life.

  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will design a 'Healthy Plate Art Installation' using clay or recycled materials to create 3D models of balanced meals, demonstrating their understanding of nutritional balance. They will also construct a 'Nutritional Benefits Mobile,' featuring hanging displays of various fruits and vegetables labeled with their specific health benefits. These creative products will be showcased at the 'Food and Energy Art Gallery' and 'Farm-to-Table Festival,' allowing students to share their learning journey with the community.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Chef's Kitchen Adventure,' where students engage in a hands-on cooking session led by a local chef. They will prepare a simple, healthy dish, discussing the importance of each ingredient and its impact on their bodies and energy levels. This activity sets the stage for exploring the essential question and ignites curiosity about food and nutrition.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Taste of Learning' event where they present a variety of healthy snacks they prepared, sharing insights on how these foods impact their energy and mood. Interactive tasting experiences will be available for guests, allowing students to discuss the nutritional benefits of each dish. Additionally, a 'Food and Energy Art Gallery' will display student-created 'Food and Feelings' journals and 'Farm-to-Table Storyboards,' accompanied by student-led discussions on their reflections and learning journey.
