Purpose

This project aims to immerse 6th-grade students in the exploration of informational text structures through the creation of a magazine. By engaging in hands-on activities like podcast production and peer critiques, students will develop critical thinking and self-directed learning skills. The project encourages students to connect with their identities and communities, fostering a sense of belonging and academic confidence. Through this real-world learning experience, students will synthesize information and communicate effectively, meeting relevant educational standards and competencies.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to identify and utilize different informational text structures, such as compare and contrast, descriptive, problem-solution, and cause and effect, to convey complex ideas effectively. They will enhance their writing skills by creating a magazine, integrating feedback, and revising their work to ensure clarity and coherence. Through the creation of a podcast series, students will practice critical thinking and problem-solving by exploring innovative ways to present their topics. Additionally, they will cultivate self-directed learning and an academic mindset by engaging in self-reflection and peer feedback, fostering a sense of identity and belonging in their learning community.
Standards
  • [North Carolina] W.6.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

  • [North Carolina] W.6.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a magazine featuring articles on a common topic, each utilizing a different informational text structure. They will also produce a podcast series, recording and editing episodes that discuss their magazine topics, incorporating interviews and sound effects. These products will be showcased during a 'Magazine Launch Party' and a gallery walk, offering opportunities for peer and community engagement.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive 'Text Structure Challenge' game where students compete in teams to match various text structure characteristics with real-world examples. Use multimedia resources such as video clips, articles, and infographics to illustrate each text type. This engaging activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for students to explore how different informational texts can be used to convey complex ideas effectively.

Exhibition

At the 'Magazine Launch Party,' students will present their magazines to an audience of parents and peers, stepping into the roles of editors and journalists. They will articulate their chosen topics and text structures, showcasing their understanding and creativity. This event will also feature interactive stations where students can discuss their podcast episodes, offering a dynamic and engaging exhibition of their work.
