Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 8th-grade students in a comprehensive exploration of political parties, both historically and in contemporary contexts, through hands-on, real-world activities. By simulating debates, creating mock political parties, and hosting a Political Party Fair, students will develop critical thinking skills, understand the complexities of voter behavior, and learn the impact of political strategies on election outcomes. This immersive experience will foster self-directed learning, promote academic mindset, and encourage students to critically reflect on their role within the political process, while meeting California state standards.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary roles of political parties in shaping voter behavior and election outcomes. They will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving to create and present their own political party platforms, fostering self-directed learning through research, reflection, and peer feedback. The project will cultivate an academic mindset by encouraging students to explore their identity and sense of belonging within the political landscape, while actively participating in simulations and exhibitions to deepen their grasp of democratic processes.
Standards
  • [California] 8.3.4 - Understand how the conflicts between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton resulted in the emergence of two political parties (e.g., view of foreign policy, Alien and Sedition Acts, economic policy, National Bank, funding and assumption of the revolutionary debt).
  • [California] 8.3.6 - Describe the basic law-making process and how the Constitution provides numerous opportunities for citizens to participate in the political process and to monitor and influence government (e.g., function of elections, political parties, interest groups).
  • [California] 8.3.1 - Analyze the principles and concepts codified in state constitutions between 1777 and 1781 that created the context out of which American political institutions and ideas developed.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will design and produce campaign posters and flyers for their mock political parties, using persuasive language and visuals to effectively communicate their platforms. These materials will be showcased during the Political Party Fair, where students will also create interactive activities and speeches to engage visitors and convey their party's message. Throughout the project, students will refine these products based on feedback received during regular check-ins, ensuring their materials are compelling and informative.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive historical simulation where students role-play key figures from the early American political landscape, such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Set up scenarios that highlight their conflicting views on government policies, allowing students to engage in debates and discussions. This immersive activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring the evolution and impact of political parties in the U.S.

Exhibition

Students will host a dynamic 'Political Party Fair' where they present their mock political parties to classmates, teachers, and invited guests. Each student group will set up engaging booths featuring campaign materials, speeches, and interactive activities designed to educate visitors about their party's platform. This exhibition will allow students to showcase their research, critical thinking, and creativity, while providing opportunities for meaningful dialogue and feedback from participants.
