Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage young students in an exploration of Earth's unique features through satellite imagery, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. By integrating hands-on activities with digital tools like Google Earth, students will discover the alphabet in the world around them, enhancing their observational skills and understanding of Earth's systems. This project aims to cultivate self-directed learning, a sense of belonging, and problem-solving abilities, as students connect their discoveries to real-world environmental and weather phenomena.

Learning goals

Students will explore Earth's unique features and weather patterns using Google Earth, developing an understanding of how these elements differentiate our planet from others. They will engage in activities that foster self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving by identifying and interpreting shapes and letters in satellite images. Through reflection and collaboration, students will build a sense of identity and belonging while connecting their findings to real-world environments and human impacts on Earth systems.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-PS3-1 - Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight on Earth's surface.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] ESS.3.D - Global Climate Change
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] ESS.3.C - Human Impacts on Earth Systems
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a 'Planet Earth Alphabet Book,' with each student contributing a page that highlights a letter or shape discovered on Google Earth, accompanied by a drawing and a sentence explaining its connection to Earth's features. Additionally, they will construct a 3D model of Earth using recycled materials, showcasing key features identified during their exploration. These projects will culminate in a 'Satellite Image Art Show,' where students will display their alphabet book pages and 3D models, celebrating their learning and creativity with the school community.

Launch

Begin with an "Earth and Sky Exploration Day," where students use Google Earth to explore and compare Earth's landscapes with those of other planets. Follow this with a hands-on activity where students create clay models of their favorite Earth features. This immersive experience will ignite curiosity and set the stage for their journey into understanding Earth's unique characteristics through satellite imagery.

Exhibition

Arrange a vibrant 'Satellite Image Art Show' where students proudly display their class mural and individual drawings, showcasing the letters and shapes they discovered on Google Earth. Invite parents, teachers, and school staff to engage with the students' creative work, offering feedback and celebrating their achievements. This exhibition provides a platform for students to articulate their learning journey and the unique aspects of Earth they have explored.
