Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 10th-grade students in applying trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve real-world architectural and engineering challenges in their community. Through hands-on design and construction of scale models, students will deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts while enhancing critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. This project fosters a connection between mathematics and its practical applications, encouraging students to explore innovative solutions to community-based problems and share their findings with peers and local stakeholders.

Learning goals

Students will apply trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve real-world architectural and engineering problems, enhancing their understanding of these mathematical concepts. They will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving by developing innovative solutions to community-based challenges. Through collaboration, students will co-design and refine their projects, practicing effective communication by presenting their work and receiving feedback. The project will culminate in the creation of scale models that demonstrate their ability to integrate mathematics into practical designs, fostering a deeper appreciation for the role of trigonometry in everyday life.
Standards
  • [California] HSG-SRT.C.8 - Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will design and construct scale models of community landmarks, such as bridges or buildings, using trigonometric ratios to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. Throughout the project, they will create digital presentations that document their design process, including sketches, calculations, and reflections on their collaborative efforts. By the end of the project, students will have a comprehensive portfolio showcasing their architectural or engineering designs, ready to present at the 'Trigonometry in Action Fair.'

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Design Challenge Kickoff' event where students are introduced to the challenge of designing architectural or engineering models that address specific community needs. Students will brainstorm and sketch initial concepts, focusing on the application of trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem. This collaborative session will culminate in a gallery walk, where students share their ideas with peers, fostering an environment of creativity and inspiration.

Exhibition

Host a 'Trigonometry in Action Fair' where students set up interactive booths to display their architectural models or engineering designs. Invite community members, including local architects and engineers, to engage with the projects, ask questions, and provide insights into the mathematical concepts used. Encourage students to articulate how they applied trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve real-world problems, fostering an environment of learning and community connection.
