Purpose

Students will explore the historical evolution of artificial intelligence to understand its current applications and predict future impacts on diverse industries. Engaging in hands-on activities, students will implement AI algorithms and critically analyze their societal implications. Through collaborative discussions and iterative project development, students will deepen their self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This experience culminates in a public exhibition, connecting students with community members and showcasing their insights and innovations.

Learning goals

Students will explore the historical development of artificial intelligence and its influence on current and future industries. They will engage in critical discussions, utilizing Adobe Express to create dynamic presentations that showcase their understanding. Through iterative critique and revisions, students will refine their projects, incorporating feedback to enhance their work. The final exhibition will allow students to present their findings to community members, demonstrating their ability to predict AI's future impact. Students will develop self-directed learning skills, critical thinking, and an academic mindset throughout the project.
Standards
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 3B-AP-08 - Describe how artificial intelligence drives many software and physical systems.
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 3B-AP-09 - Implement an artificial intelligence algorithm to play a game against a human opponent or solve a problem.
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 3B-IC-27 - Predict how computational innovations that have revolutionized aspects of our culture might evolve.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a digital timeline using Adobe Express that traces the historical development of AI, highlighting key milestones and innovations. They will also develop a simple AI algorithm to play a game against a human opponent, demonstrating their understanding of AI principles. The final product will be a presentation at a public exhibition, where students will showcase their projects and discuss potential future impacts of AI on various industries with community members.

Launch

Begin the project with an engaging discussion on the evolution of artificial intelligence, highlighting key milestones and breakthroughs. Invite a guest speaker from a local tech company to share insights on AI's current applications and future potential. Facilitate a brainstorming session where students identify industries most impacted by AI, setting the stage for their exploration and predictions.

Exhibition

Students will present their AI projects at a public showcase attended by community members from various companies and organizations throughout Spokane, Washington. Each student will demonstrate their understanding of AI's history and its potential future impact on industries through interactive displays or digital presentations created using Adobe Express. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with students, ask questions, and provide feedback, fostering a dialogue about AI's role in society.
