Purpose

This project immerses students in a dynamic exploration of the Gilded Age, challenging them to critically evaluate historical figures through the lens of economic, social, and political impact. By engaging with primary sources and collaborating with community partners, students develop a nuanced understanding of historical narratives and their relevance to contemporary issues. The project fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and academic mindset, empowering students to articulate informed positions and contribute meaningfully to community discussions.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by analyzing primary sources and biographies to form evidence-based arguments about historical figures. They will engage in self-directed learning through reflection and feedback, fostering personal growth and empathy. The project aims to enhance students' academic mindset, establishing a sense of identity and belonging while exploring complex economic and social questions relevant to their communities. Through collaboration and community engagement, students will gain a deeper understanding of the Gilded Age and its impact on modern society.

Products

Throughout the project, students will develop interactive digital timelines that detail the significant events and decisions of Rockefeller, Morgan, Gould, Stanford, and Vanderbilt, emphasizing their societal and economic impacts. By the end, students will produce multimedia presentations or documentaries that articulate their stance on whether these figures were philanthropists or robber barons, supported by evidence from primary sources and biographies. These products will be showcased during 'The Gilded Age Debate Night,' providing students an opportunity to present their findings to peers, teachers, and community members.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive 'The Gilded Age Escape Room' activity where students work in teams to solve puzzles and uncover clues related to the lives and business practices of Rockefeller, Morgan, Gould, Stanford, and Vanderbilt. This engaging experience will encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and curiosity, setting the stage for deeper exploration of the essential question. As students navigate the escape room, they will be introduced to key themes and historical contexts that will guide their research and analysis throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will present their multimedia presentations or documentaries during 'The Gilded Age Debate Night,' inviting peers, teachers, and community members to engage with their findings. The event will feature a panel discussion with local historians or business leaders, providing students with feedback and insights into their arguments. This exhibition will allow students to showcase their research and critical thinking skills, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community engagement.
