Purpose

Students will design a "dreamhouse" for a classmate, integrating mathematical concepts of area, perimeter, and measurement. Through this project, they will apply real-world skills in economics to calculate construction costs, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving. This hands-on experience encourages self-directed learning and academic mindset development as students collaborate, reflect, and adapt their designs to meet specific needs and budgets.

Learning goals

Students will design a dreamhouse for a classmate, applying mathematical concepts of area and perimeter to create a blueprint that meets specific needs and budgets. They will use customary units to calculate costs, integrating economics to determine the feasibility of their designs. Through self-directed learning, students will reflect on their progress, utilize feedback, and adjust their plans accordingly. They will develop an academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging within the project, fostering self-efficacy. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills will be honed as students explore various innovative approaches to address complex questions related to architecture and budgeting.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create detailed blueprints of their "dreamhouse" designs, incorporating accurate measurements of area and perimeter. Launch

Begin the project by inviting students to imagine their dream house and sketch a rough design on paper. Host a virtual tour of unique homes around the world, highlighting how architects use math in their designs. Encourage students to discuss what features they would include in their dream house and why, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. This activity sets the stage for understanding the real-world application of area, perimeter, and economic considerations in home design.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will present their "dreamhouse" designs to classmates and invited guests, such as parents or school staff, in a gallery walk format. Each student will display their house plans, including calculations for area, perimeter, and estimated building costs, alongside a brief explanation of their design choices. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback, allowing students to engage in meaningful dialogue about their mathematical and creative processes. This exhibition will celebrate students' learning and creativity, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community connection.
