Purpose

This unit aims to immerse students in the foundational period of America's self-governance, focusing on the transition from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution. Through hands-on activities and project-based learning, students will critically explore the challenges and debates that shaped early American political structures. The experience encourages students to engage with historical figures and events, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of governance and the evolution of democratic principles.

Learning goals

Students will explore the foundational aspects of America's self-governance by examining the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. They will identify and analyze the economic, political, and cultural challenges faced during this period, understanding how these influenced the drafting of the Constitution. Through hands-on activities, students will develop critical thinking skills by debating major issues from the Constitutional Convention and engaging in self-directed learning through peer feedback and reflection. The project aims to deepen students' academic mindset by fostering a sense of identity and belonging within the historical context.

Products

Students will create timeline murals and multimedia presentations that visually and narratively depict the transition from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution. They will also produce political cartoons that humorously yet insightfully illustrate the issues and debates of the era. These products will be showcased in a 'Constitutional Gallery Walk' exhibition, allowing students to present their work to peers, parents, and visiting classes, demonstrating their understanding and creativity.

Launch

Begin the unit with a dynamic 'Historical Scavenger Hunt,' where students explore key artifacts, documents, and maps related to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitutional Convention.
