Purpose

The purpose of this project is to equip 10th-grade students with the skills to conduct comprehensive community needs analyses, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Through hands-on research and collaboration, students will develop sustainable solutions that address real-world issues, enhancing their academic mindset and self-directed learning. By engaging with community partners and presenting their findings at public events, students will strengthen their sense of identity and belonging while making a tangible impact on their local community.

Learning goals

Students will develop research skills by designing and conducting a community survey, analyzing the data collected, and integrating findings into a comprehensive research paper. They will enhance their collaboration abilities through teamwork in identifying and solving community issues, culminating in the creation of sustainable solutions. Students will also improve their communication and presentation skills by producing multimedia content and engaging with community members at various events. Through reflection and feedback, students will gain insights into their learning process and the impact of their work on the community.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Cn10.1.II.b - Use established research methods and techniques to investigate a topic. Collaborate with others to identify questions and solve movement problems that pertain to the topic. Create and perform a piece of choreography. Discuss orally or in writing the insights relating to knowledge gained through the research process, the synergy of collaboration, and the transfer of learning from this project to other learning situations.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.7 - Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.9-10.7 - Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will develop educational pamphlets or infographics to raise awareness about specific community issues, distributing them at the 'Community Solutions Expo.' They will produce a short documentary film capturing community challenges and their journey in creating sustainable solutions, which will be screened at the 'Community Impact Fair.' Additionally, students will create an interactive digital map highlighting key areas of need within the community, using survey data and research to provide insights and suggest potential solutions.

Launch

Kick off the project with a community walk where students observe and document various aspects of their neighborhood, identifying potential areas of need. Follow this with a brainstorming session where students share their observations and generate initial questions about community challenges. Conclude the launch with a guest speaker from a local organization who can provide insights into current community issues, setting the stage for the research and solutions development process.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Community Solutions Expo,' setting up interactive booths to present their multimedia presentations and engage in dialogue with community partners and local residents. They will also participate in a 'Community Impact Fair' in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, showcasing their projects in a science-fair style format that encourages community feedback and voting on impactful solutions. These events will provide students with a platform to share their research, receive constructive input, and reflect on their contributions to addressing community needs.
