Purpose

Students will explore the historical and cultural significance of stained glass windows in Roman Catholic churches, using this medium to express personal narratives and engage in storytelling. Through hands-on creation, research, and peer collaboration, students will deepen their understanding of visual symbolism and its impact on audiences. This project fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and a sense of identity as students design and present their stained glass-inspired works to the school and local community.

Learning goals

Students will explore the historical and cultural significance of stained glass windows in Roman Catholic churches, focusing on their role in storytelling and symbolism. They will develop skills in visual organization by designing and creating their own stained glass-inspired art pieces using color and symbolism to convey narratives. Through research, critique, and reflection, students will enhance their self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while building a sense of identity and belonging within their community.

Products

Students will create individual stained glass window panels using colored cellophane and black construction paper, each reflecting a personal narrative inspired by Roman Catholic stories and symbols. These panels will be assembled into a collaborative installation displayed in the school. Additionally, students will contribute to a mural in the school hallway that mimics a stained glass window, with each section representing different Roman Catholic symbolism and storytelling. Finally, students will participate in a live storytelling event, presenting and narrating the stories depicted in their stained glass designs to engage with the community.

Launch

Begin the project with a visit to a local Roman Catholic church, where students can observe and analyze the stained glass windows firsthand. Encourage students to take notes and sketch their favorite designs, focusing on the use of color, symbolism, and storytelling. Back in the classroom, facilitate a discussion where students share their observations and initial interpretations, setting the stage for their own stained glass creations.

Exhibition

Students will host a vibrant showcase event in the school auditorium, where they will display their collaborative stained glass window installation and mural. Each student will present their individual panel, sharing the personal narratives and Roman Catholic symbolism depicted in their designs. The event will include a live storytelling segment, inviting community members to engage with the students' stories and ask questions. The virtual exhibition will complement the live event, allowing broader community access to students' digital portfolios and reflections.
