Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on project that combines creativity and geometry by designing unique geometric puzzles based on the Triangle Sum Theorem. This project encourages students to explore and apply mathematical concepts in artistic and practical contexts, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By collaborating with peers and reflecting on feedback, students will develop a deeper understanding of geometry while creating engaging puzzles that visually demonstrate the principles of triangle sums.

Learning goals

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the Triangle Sum Theorem by designing and constructing a creative geometric puzzle that incorporates triangles and their angle sums. They will engage in self-directed learning by utilizing feedback from peers and the teacher to refine their designs. Students will also develop critical thinking skills as they explore various artistic and mathematical approaches to represent triangle sums visually. Through this project, they will enhance their academic mindset by reflecting on how triangles are used in art and puzzles, fostering a deeper connection to the material.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.HSG-SRT.B.4 - Prove theorems about triangles.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.HSG-SRT.B.4 - Prove theorems about triangles.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.HSG-SRT.B.5 - Use congruence and similarity criteria for triangles to solve problems and to prove relationships in geometric figures.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will design and construct a unique geometric puzzle that incorporates the Triangle Sum Theorem, utilizing various materials to create an engaging, hands-on experience. Each puzzle will feature a visual representation or model that clearly explains the concept of triangle sums, ensuring it is accessible to peers unfamiliar with geometry. Throughout the project, students will iteratively refine their puzzles based on peer and teacher feedback, culminating in a final presentation where they demonstrate their puzzle's functionality and educational value.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive session where students explore various art pieces and puzzles that incorporate triangles. Invite a local artist or puzzle designer to discuss how geometric principles influence their work. Following the discussion, students will brainstorm in groups to identify how triangle sums can be creatively integrated into their own puzzle designs. This will spark curiosity and set the stage for the project, encouraging students to think critically about the application of geometry in real-world contexts.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their geometric puzzles in a "Triangle Puzzle Gallery Walk" where peers, teachers, and community members can interact with each puzzle. Each student will present their puzzle, explaining the principles of triangle sums used and how the design creatively represents these concepts. Attendees will provide feedback and engage in discussions, allowing students to reflect on their learning and the effectiveness of their visual representations.
