Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in a dynamic exploration of literary themes and their relevance to real-world issues and personal experiences. By connecting literature to contemporary social topics, students will develop critical thinking skills and foster a deeper understanding of the impact of storytelling. Through hands-on projects, community collaboration, and reflective practices, students will gain the confidence to articulate their insights and contribute thoughtfully to discussions about literature and society.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to identify and analyze themes in literature, connecting them to contemporary social issues and personal experiences. They will enhance their critical thinking skills by engaging in thematic research projects and presenting evidence-based solutions. Through collaborative activities and community engagement, students will refine their communication skills and deepen their understanding of literature's impact on society.

  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will create thematic research projects that delve into real-world issues related to the novel's themes, culminating in interactive displays for the 'Theme Exploration Fair.' They will also produce original artwork, poetry, or short stories that reflect personal connections to these themes, which will be showcased in a thematic exhibition. Additionally, students will develop and share original stories or poems during the 'Storytelling Festival,' engaging with their community through storytelling circles and discussions.

Launch

Begin with a 'Theme Connection Campfire' where students gather in small groups to share personal stories or experiences that resonate with the novel's themes. This activity will create a welcoming environment for students to connect with each other and the material on a personal level. Encourage students to listen actively and reflect on how their peers' stories relate to broader themes in literature and society.

Exhibition

Host a 'Storytelling Festival' where students present original stories or poems inspired by the novel's themes. Invite family and community members to join in storytelling circles and engage in discussions. Encourage students to set up interactive booths as part of a 'Theme Exploration Fair,' where they can showcase their thematic research projects, offering demonstrations and engaging visitors with their findings and proposed solutions.
