Purpose

Students will engage in a dynamic project to design a seal for the Visual and Performing Arts department, integrating artistic principles and digital media to create a meaningful emblem. This hands-on experience encourages students to explore their identity and sense of belonging within the Montebello Unified School District community. By collaborating and utilizing feedback, students will refine their designs, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills while addressing real-world design challenges.

Learning goals

Students will create a cohesive and meaningful seal that reflects the Visual and Performing Arts department's identity, using digital media to enhance their design presentations for clarity and impact. Through self-directed learning, students will engage in iterative design processes, utilizing feedback to refine their work. They will cultivate an academic mindset by exploring their personal and community identities, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. Critical thinking and problem-solving will be central as students explore innovative design solutions that resonate with the Montebello Unified School District community.

Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively design a seal for the Visual and Performing Arts department, incorporating diverse artistic elements and digital media. Throughout the project, they will create design drafts, digital presentations, and a final emblem that reflects the artistic diversity of the Montebello Unified School District. The final product will be a professionally printed seal that can be displayed within the school district, accompanied by a reflective presentation detailing the design process and community impact.

Launch

Start the project with a gallery walk showcasing a diverse array of visual and performing arts emblems from different cultures and communities. Facilitate a group discussion where students analyze the symbolism and elements in these designs, exploring how art reflects identity and community values. This activity will inspire students to brainstorm initial ideas for their emblem designs, encouraging connections between the arts and their personal and community identities.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their final seal designs in a community exhibition that invites local artists, educators, and family members to engage with the students' creative processes. Each student will present their design concept, highlighting how they incorporated diverse artistic elements to solve design challenges. The exhibition will include interactive stations where attendees can provide feedback, allowing students to reflect on their work and its impact on the community. This event will serve as a platform for students to articulate their learning journey and the significance of their artistic contributions to the Visual and Performing Arts department.
