Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in an interactive exploration of figurative language and its impact on text meaning and tone. Through collaborative activities and discussions, students will deepen their understanding of how literary devices shape narratives and evoke emotions. This hands-on approach aims to enhance students' analytical skills and foster a personal connection to the texts they study, encouraging them to appreciate the nuances of language in literature.

Learning goals

Students will explore and analyze the role of figurative language in shaping the tone and meaning of texts. They will collaboratively identify and categorize figurative language examples, connecting these to their effects on interpretation and emotional impact. Through a class discussion circle and a 'Language Impact Debate,' students will deepen their understanding and articulate insights, fostering both academic and socio-emotional growth.
Standards
  • [Massachusetts] L.7.5 - Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
  • [Massachusetts] RI.7.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

Products

Students will create digital infographics or posters that visually represent various figurative language terms, including their meanings and examples from texts. They will also participate in a 'Language Impact Debate,' where they articulate and defend their interpretations of how figurative language influences tone and meaning. These activities will culminate in a gallery walk, where students showcase their work and engage with peers' interpretations, fostering a deeper understanding of the material.

Launch

Begin the lesson with a dynamic 'Language Impact Debate' where students are divided into small groups to discuss and debate how different figurative language choices can alter the interpretation and emotional impact of a text. Provide each group with a short passage or poem that includes various figurative language elements. Encourage students to explore and argue different interpretations, setting the stage for them to actively engage with the core content and essential question.

Exhibition

The exhibition will feature a dynamic slideshow presentation led by the teacher, showcasing student-created digital infographics and posters that illustrate various figurative language terms and their effects on tone and meaning. Students will participate in a gallery walk, explaining their visual representations and examples from texts to peers and community members. This interactive exhibition allows students to articulate their understanding and engage in discussions, highlighting the impact of figurative language on textual interpretation.
