Purpose

This project immerses students in the Spanish language through the exploration of past travel experiences, enhancing their narrative skills using preterite tense and travel vocabulary. By engaging in interactive activities such as skits and digital scrapbooks, students will deepen their understanding of cultural contexts and improve their language proficiency. The project fosters self-directed learning, critical thinking, and academic mindset by encouraging students to reflect on their identities and experiences, while also promoting collaboration and communication through peer feedback and presentations.

Learning goals

Students will effectively use preterite tense and travel vocabulary to narrate and compare past travel experiences in Spanish. They will develop skills in self-directed learning through peer feedback and reflection, enhancing their language proficiency and socio-emotional understanding. Additionally, students will engage in critical thinking by exploring diverse perspectives and cultural insights, fostering a sense of identity and belonging through creative storytelling and performance.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D4.3.9-12 - Present adaptations of arguments and explanations that feature evocative ideas and perspectives on issues and topics to reach a range of audiences and venues outside the classroom using print and oral technologies (e.g., posters, essays, letters, debates, speeches, reports, and maps) and digital technologies (e.g., Internet, social media, and digital documentary).
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Pr6.HS1.a - Perform a scripted drama/theatre work for a specific audience.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create digital travel scrapbooks in Spanish, using images and captions to narrate past experiences with preterite tense and travel vocabulary. They will also compose and perform short skits reenacting travel experiences, integrating language skills and emotional expression. The final products will be shared during a 'Travel Experience Gallery Walk,' where visual and written reflections are displayed, inviting peer feedback on language use and socio-emotional insights.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Passport to the Past' activity where students receive mock passports and visit different stations to hear classmates' travel stories in Spanish. At each station, students listen to narratives using preterite tense and travel vocabulary, collecting stamps for each story they engage with. This immersive experience sets the stage for the project by fostering curiosity and encouraging active participation in sharing and comparing past travel experiences.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their digital travel scrapbooks and perform their skits during a "Spanish Travel Expo" event. Each student will have a booth where they display their scrapbook, allowing visitors to explore their travel narratives and leave feedback. The skit performances will be scheduled throughout the event, providing an engaging platform for students to demonstrate their language skills and emotional expression in front of an audience. The expo will conclude with a reflection session where students discuss their learning journey and insights gained from peer interactions.
