Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in a dynamic, real-world learning experience where they collaboratively design and operate a Spanish-language restaurant. Through this hands-on approach, students will deepen their understanding of language structures by actively using present tense verbs and future expressions in authentic contexts. By engaging in role-play and creative menu design, students will enhance their communication skills, foster a sense of identity and belonging, and develop critical thinking abilities that connect language learning to broader cultural and community contexts.

Learning goals

Students will develop conversational skills in Spanish by using present tense verbs and future expressions in authentic restaurant scenarios. They will enhance their creativity and collaboration by designing menus and dialogues, incorporating feedback to refine their work. Through role-playing and digital presentations, students will improve their pronunciation, fluency, and technological proficiency. The project will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking, encouraging students to reflect on language use and their socio-emotional growth in group settings.

  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cr1.HS3.b - Create a complete design for a drama/theatre work that incorporates all elements of technology.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and create a digital cookbook showcasing their Spanish-language menus, complete with images and descriptions of each dish. They will also produce audio or video recordings of their restaurant dialogues, demonstrating their language skills and creativity. These products will be shared with the school community, allowing students to showcase their work and engage with a wider audience.

Launch

Kick off the project with a vibrant 'Role-Play Fiesta' where students dive into their roles as restaurant staff and customers. Set up stations with props like menus, aprons, and table settings to simulate a real restaurant environment. Encourage students to experiment with language through interactive dialogues, rotating roles to gain diverse perspectives. This immersive experience will spark excitement and set the stage for deeper learning throughout the project.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the project, host a 'Cultural Cuisine Showcase' where students present their digital cookbooks and perform their restaurant dialogues for an audience of peers, teachers, and community members. Set up booths for each group to display their menus and share samples of the dishes they have designed. Encourage visitors to engage with students through interactive role-play scenarios, providing an authentic audience for their language skills and creative efforts. This exhibition serves as a celebration of students' hard work and learning, offering them a platform to demonstrate their mastery of language and theatrical performance.
