Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage middle school students in a meaningful exploration of civic virtues and democratic principles through the lens of gratitude for the armed forces. Students will analyze founding documents to understand their influence on American symbols and traditions, while documenting and sharing personal stories of appreciation for veterans and active military personnel. Through self-directed learning, critical reflection, and problem-solving, students will create a tribute that honors the diverse experiences and identities within their community, fostering a sense of belonging and academic mindset.

Learning goals

Students will analyze founding documents to understand their influence on civic responsibilities and democratic principles. They will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on feedback and their experiences to create tributes honoring veterans and active military personnel. Through documenting personal stories of gratitude, students will develop a sense of identity and belonging, enhancing their academic mindset. Additionally, they will employ critical thinking to explore the significance of American symbols and traditions, considering diverse perspectives within the community.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct a community tribute, such as a mural or installation, that honors veterans and active military personnel. They will create a digital archive of personal stories and expressions of gratitude, including interviews, written reflections, and multimedia presentations. Additionally, students will develop an educational exhibit showcasing American symbols and traditions, highlighting their significance and diverse meanings across different communities. These products will be shared at a community event, allowing students to engage with and present their work to local citizens and veterans.

Launch

To kick off the project, students will participate in a community event where they interview local veterans and active military personnel. They will gather stories and insights about their experiences and contributions, using these narratives to inspire their project work. This event will serve as a powerful introduction to the themes of gratitude, civic duty, and the significance of American symbols, setting the stage for deeper exploration and reflection throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a community event to showcase their projects, which include multimedia presentations, art installations, and written narratives that honor veterans and active military personnel. They will create interactive exhibits that feature personal stories of gratitude and appreciation, gathered through interviews and research. The event will also include performances and displays of American symbols and traditions, reflecting the diverse experiences and identities within the community. Students will invite local veterans, military members, families, and community leaders to engage in dialogue and celebrate their contributions.
