Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on exploration of the butterfly life cycle, fostering an understanding of growth, change, and ecological roles. Through direct observation and interaction with local community partners, students will construct knowledge about the needs and contributions of butterflies in their environment. This project encourages critical thinking and problem-solving as students reflect on their learning, enhance self-directed skills, and build a sense of belonging and identity within the natural world.

Learning goals

Students will observe and document the life cycle of butterflies, noting similarities and differences between parent and offspring. They will explore the needs of butterflies for survival, including habitat and food, through hands-on activities and interactions with local community partners. Students will engage in physical activities that mimic butterfly movements, integrating balance and coordination skills. They will reflect on their learning process, using feedback to enhance their understanding and develop a sense of belonging within their learning community. Through critical thinking, students will investigate the role of butterflies in ecosystems, considering their impact on plant pollination and interactions with other species.
Standards
  • [California] 1-LS3-1 - Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.
  • [California] 1.1.6 - Balance oneself, demonstrating momentary stillness, in symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes using body parts other than both feet as a base of support.
  • [California] 1.1.18 - Strike a balloon upward continuously, using arms, hands, and feet.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a butterfly observation journal, documenting the life cycle stages of butterflies they observe, including drawings and notes on changes and needs for survival. They will design and build a small butterfly garden in the schoolyard, incorporating plants that attract butterflies and support their ecosystem role. Additionally, students will collaborate with local organizations to create a presentation or display for the community, showcasing their findings on how butterflies contribute to their environment.

Launch

Begin the project with a butterfly garden exploration at a local park or nature reserve, where students can observe butterflies in their natural habitat. Partner with local environmental organizations to provide an interactive session where students learn about the butterfly life cycle and their role in the ecosystem. Encourage students to document their observations through drawings and notes, which they will use to create a class mural depicting the life cycle and habitat of butterflies.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Butterfly Life Cycle Fair" where they present their findings and creations to peers, teachers, and local community partners. Each student will display a project board showcasing the stages of a butterfly's life cycle, complete with drawings, observations, and models. Additionally, students will perform a short skit or dance that represents the metamorphosis process, integrating their understanding of balance and movement. The event will also feature interactive stations where visitors can learn about the role of butterflies in ecosystems and participate in activities like balloon striking games themed around butterfly flight.
