Purpose

In this project, students will explore the unseen world of microorganisms and their significant impact on human life. By curating a "Museum of the Invisible," they will investigate the structure and function of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, as well as the role of various organelles. Through hands-on microscopy and collaborative inquiry, students will develop models to understand cellular systems and their interactions. This immersive experience encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking, and fosters a sense of identity and belonging as students connect scientific concepts to real-world applications.

Learning goals

Students will investigate the role and impact of microorganisms on human life, exploring both beneficial and harmful examples. They will develop skills in microscopy, learning to observe and analyze micro-life, and understand the structure and function of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, including the role of organelles. Through project-based activities, students will engage in self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving, using feedback to guide their exploration of complex systems and their interactions.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-LS1-1 - Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells, either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-LS1-2 - Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 6-8.AG.4.1 - Systems may interact with other systems; they may have sub-systems and be a part of larger complex systems.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively curate a "Museum of the Invisible," where each group will create a detailed exhibit showcasing a specific microorganism. The exhibit will include a 3D model of the microorganism, digital or physical, demonstrating its structure and function, and an interactive presentation explaining its impact on human life. Students will also produce a reflective journal documenting their research process, use of microscopy, and insights gained from peer feedback, fostering self-directed learning and critical thinking.

Launch

Begin the unit with an interactive "Invisible World" scavenger hunt using microscopes. Students will explore various prepared slides of microorganisms, documenting their observations and forming initial hypotheses about the roles these microorganisms play in human life. This hands-on activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration into the systems and functions of cells, as well as the impact of microorganisms on our daily lives.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Museum of the Invisible" exhibition, where they will present their curated displays of microorganisms to peers, teachers, and community members. Each student will create an interactive model or digital presentation that explains the microorganism's impact on human life, highlighting whether it is harmful or beneficial. The exhibition will include a hands-on microscopy station, allowing visitors to observe cell samples and explore the intricate world of microlife. Students will engage with visitors by answering questions and demonstrating their understanding of cellular systems, fostering a collaborative and educational environment.
