What question will guide the project and learning?

(1) How are cities and communities organized. How do people in different cultures plan errands and travel around a city? How does where we live impact how we leave?
(2) How can we use the subjunctive mood in Spanish to express hopes and desires for our community's future?
(3) In what ways can we use past participles as adjectives to describe events in our city's history?
(4) How can we collaborate to design a community project plan using 'nosotros' commands to improve a local public space?

Purpose

Students will engage in an immersive project that connects language learning with community involvement by designing a model city and organizing a community event. Through this hands-on experience, they will explore how cities are organized, express hopes and desires using the subjunctive mood, and describe historical events using past participles. By collaborating to improve a local public space, students will apply 'nosotros' commands and foster a sense of community responsibility and pride. The project encourages students to use Spanish in meaningful contexts, enhancing their language skills while making a tangible impact on their school environment.

Learning goals

Students will explore how cities and communities are organized and how cultural differences influence urban planning and daily activities. They will practice using the subjunctive mood in Spanish to articulate hopes and desires for community improvements. Through collaboration, students will apply 'nosotros' commands to create actionable plans for enhancing a local public space. Additionally, they will utilize past participles as adjectives to describe historical events, fostering a deeper understanding of their community's history. The project culminates in a community event where students present their ideas and engage with school community members in a hands-on improvement activity.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct a miniature model city in the garden using recycled materials, incorporating Spanish labels with past participles to describe historical events or features. They will organize a community event where they present their improvement plans for the garden, using 'nosotros' commands, and engage school community members in a hands-on planting or clean-up activity. This project will culminate in a shared community experience that highlights students' language skills and their ability to plan and execute a real-world project.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, students will embark on a "City Scavenger Hunt" within the school grounds, simulating a journey through a city. They will receive clues in Spanish that guide them to various locations, where they will encounter tasks involving the use of subjunctive mood, past participles, and 'nosotros' commands. This immersive activity will introduce them to the key concepts and vocabulary while fostering collaboration and setting the stage for their community project.

Exhibition

Students will host a "City of the Future" exhibition in the school garden, showcasing their miniature model city to the school community. Each student group will present their model, highlighting the use of past participles as adjectives and explaining their design choices in Spanish. During the event, students will guide visitors through their proposed community improvement plans using 'nosotros' commands, followed by a collaborative activity where participants can engage in planting or cleaning the garden space. This exhibition will provide a platform for students to articulate their learning and engage the community in meaningful dialogue and action.
