Purpose

In this project, students will engage in role-playing activities at a simulated restaurant to develop conversational skills and confidence in ordering food. Through interactive scenarios, they will practice key vocabulary and phrases, receive and provide feedback, and refine their communication techniques. This hands-on experience fosters critical thinking and problem-solving as students navigate real-world social interactions, enhancing their self-directed learning and academic mindset.

Learning goals

Students will engage in role-play scenarios at a restaurant to practice conversational phrases and vocabulary, enhancing their confidence in ordering food. They will receive and provide peer feedback during presentations, refining their communication skills through critique and revision. Through self-directed learning, students will reflect on their progress and adapt their approaches, fostering a deeper understanding of their learning process. They will also explore diverse problem-solving strategies to address authentic challenges in restaurant interactions, building a sense of identity and belonging within their community.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and role-play a restaurant scenario, creating a menu and practicing ordering food using key vocabulary and conversational phrases. They will develop a video presentation demonstrating their interactions, showcasing their ability to confidently navigate a restaurant setting. Throughout the project, students will engage in peer critiques to refine their communication skills and enhance their understanding of the cultural nuances involved in dining experiences.

Launch

Begin the project by inviting students to share their personal experiences of ordering at a restaurant, discussing any challenges or successes they encountered. Facilitate a group brainstorming session where students identify key conversational phrases and vocabulary they believe are essential for effective communication in a restaurant setting. Encourage students to reflect on their feelings and confidence levels during these experiences, setting the stage for the project’s focus on improving self-directed learning and academic mindset through role-play scenarios.

Exhibition

Students will host a mock restaurant event where they take turns playing roles as customers and waitstaff. They will use conversational phrases and vocabulary learned throughout the project, demonstrating their ability to order confidently and engage in polite dialogue. Peers and teachers will provide feedback on communication skills and fluency, fostering a supportive environment for critique and revision. This exhibition allows students to showcase their understanding, receive constructive feedback, and reflect on their learning journey.
